Due to lots of enthusiasm from the community, we set up this project in August 2019 - using social media, we asked for volunteers to help deliver the project   ...and what a fantastic response we got!!

Here is a brief overview of our aims, objectives and outcomes, to date:

Aims

  1. Identify public spaces within Oakdale &Penmaen that are neglected, unkempt and problem areas for litter
  2. Enhance and return the public spaces to safe, clean, environmentally friendly areas to be enjoyed by all

Objectives

  1. Recruit and co-ordinate group(s) of community-minded volunteers, WITHOUT WHOM, NONE OF THIS WOULD HAPPEN:
  2. Litter-picking
  3. Clearing pavements of weeds, moss and general litter
  4. Light Gardening, such as pulling weeds, raking leaves etc
  5. Ground maintenance such as cleaning paving

Outcomes - Autumn 2019

In just two sessions, we collected almost 50 refuse bags of rubbish.

Oakdale Square and gardens had a wonderful facelift and were left in a clean, safe, litter-free zone.

Pavements outside the shops around the square were cleared, weeded and swept.

Central Avenue lay-bys were cleared of years of built up dirt, weeds and grit

The area around the War Memorial has been weeded, raked and considerable debris removed.

Along with all of the above outcomes, we cannot help stating the fantastic unintended outcomes, noticed:

There has been a real surge in community spirit and pride in our area.

Several families, including children have joined in ...and loved it!

The retailers, takeaways and food and drink outlets of Oakdale Square have gladly provided refreshments for our wonderful volunteers, which we all enjoy and again, the chats, banter and laughter (oh okay and stiff joints!) have fed into the sense of achievement and community spirit more than was ever anticipated.
